Introducing the EZ-Pod!

	Each volume in our new "EZ-Pod" series consists of an iPod containing the audiobook version of an young adult novel, accompanied by a paperback copy of the same novel. With the EZ-Pod, borrowers have the option of listening, reading, or doing both at the same time.
The EZ-Pod was developed specifically for students taking courses in ESL (English as a Second Language) and EAP (English for Academic Purposes), but anyone can enjoy the titles in this series. The following EZ-Pod titles are currently available:

In celebration of Women's History Month, we've just introduced the PinkPod, an iPod containing a variety of materials that focus on the struggles and successes of women throughout history.

In addition to audiobooks and videos, the PinkPod contains a slideshow of 35 thought-provoking quotes by famous women such as Mother Teresa, Margaret Mead, Anaïs Nin, Wilma Rudolph, Golda Meir, and Indira Gandhi.

Created in celebration of Women's History Month, the PinkPod contains a variety of audiobooks, videos, and other materials that focus on the struggles and successes of women throughout history.

Contents include biographies of famous women, literary works by and about women, musical performances, documentaries, discussions of contemporary women's issues, and more. Whether it's Maya Angelou's poetry, Frida Kahlo's paintings, Helen Keller's remarkable life story, or Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have Fun, you're sure to find something to inspire you!

Time Out Turns 50!

	This year, the jazz world celebrates the golden anniversary of The Dave Brubeck Quartet's groundbreaking album Time Out. It was in 1959 that the album "shook up the notion of rhythm in jazz" with an odd-metered song called Take Five.*
The JazzPod, our jazz-themed iPod that you can check out of the library, contains the entire original Time Out album, including the legendary hits Take Five and Blue Rondo à la Turk. New LitPod Features Classic Short Stories

If you're interested in classical music, you're sure to enjoy the BachPod, a compilation of sound recordings, music videos, podcasts, and audiobooks available on iPods that may be checked out of the library. The BachPod contains over 17 hours of music by composers such as Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Debussy, Stravinsky, Bartók, Prokofiev, Copland, and, of course, Bach.

Also included are examples of medieval music, traditional folk music, world music, opera, jazz, and more. Audiobooks from the Conductor's Guides series and Keyboard Conversations series will help you learn more about these great musical works, and podcast episodes of the National Public Radio program From the Top will introduce you to some of America's best young classical musicians.

iPod Chargers Now Available

Would you believe that you can charge an iPod using an onion and two cups of Gatorade? This YouTube video claims it's possible, but we sincerely hope you won't try it with one of our iPods...and now you don't have to!

If you've borrowed one of the library's iPods and need to re-charge it, a limited number of iPod chargers are now available for check-out.

These chargers allow you to plug the iPod directly into a wall outlet (no computer or Gatorade needed). Ask for a charger at the Library Circulation Desk, and be sure to specify whether you need a Shuffle charger or a Video/Nano charger.

Do you love audiobooks but miss curling up with a "real" book? Are you interested in literary classics but find them too intimidating? The "LitPod" could be just the thing for you!

Each volume in the Kendall Campus Library's new LitPod series consists of an iPod containing the audiobook version of a classic literary work, accompanied by the print version of the same work.

The LitPod was developed to give borrowers the option of listening, reading, or doing both at the same time.

Do you like jazz music? Want to learn more about it? The Kendall Campus Library is pleased to introduce the "JazzPod," a collection of jazz-related materials available on iPods that may be checked out of the library.

The JazzPod contains over ten hours of music by jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and many others.

Also included are music videos, podcasts, audiobooks, photographs, text files, and a brief tutorial on how to log into the library's music databases. You'll also find eleven episodes of the 2006 PBS television series, Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis, with performances by guest artists like Chris Botti, Roy Hargrove, David Sanborn, Ivan Lins, Al Jarreau, Eddie Palmieri, and Lee Ritenour.

iPod FAQs

How long may I keep the iPod?

The loan period is 7 days.

Have the earbuds been used by other borrowers?

Yes, but new earbud covers are provided for the next user.

Where's the cable that connects the iPod to a computer?

The cable is not usually provided, since it is not necessary to connect the iPod to a computer in order to listen to the iPod's contents.

If the iPod needs to be recharged, please return it to the library, or visit the Circulation Desk to check out an iPod charger.

How long does the battery last?

The iPod should be fully charged when you check it out. The battery life is approximately 12 hours for the iPod Shuffle, or 24 hours for the iPod Nano. The video iPod should run for approximately 14 hours of music playback, or 3.5 hours of video playback.

To check the battery charge of the iPod Shuffle, turn it off and then on again. When you turn it on, the light displayed next to the on/off switch indicates the charge (green = good; orange = low; red = very low; no color = no charge).

For the iPod Nano and the video iPod, a battery icon in the upper right corner of the screen indicates the charge:

If the iPod needs to be recharged, please return it to the library, or visit the Circulation Desk to check out an iPod charger.

The audiobook won't play. What am I doing wrong?

First, make sure the iPod is turned on, and the volume is turned up. Follow the instructions above to check for sufficient battery charge.

If you are using an iPod Shuffle, make sure the device is not on the "shuffle" setting. The iPod Shuffle must be set to play sequentially in order to hear the audiobook.

If I stop listening to an audiobook and go back to it later, does it remember where I left off?

Yes, if you turn the iPod off and then on again, it will begin playing from where you left off.

I lost my place in the audiobook and can't get back to it. What should I do?

With the iPod Shuffle, it is best to avoid pressing the back or forward buttons, as this can cause you to lose your place in the audiobook. However, if you press one of these buttons and hold it down, you can rewind or fast-forward to the desired place.

With the iPod Nano and video iPod, you can rewind or fast-forward in the same way, or, from the Now Playing screen, press the center button and use the click wheel to go back or forward through the audiobook.

Can I listen to the iPod in my car?

To listen to the iPod in your car without using the earbuds, you must have a transmitter that allows your car radio to pick up the sound from the iPod. Some newer model cars have stereos to which you can connect an auxiliary device such as an iPod. If your car is equipped with this, you can connect the iPod, but you must provide the proper cable. The library is not making cables or transmitters available at this time.

Can I burn the iPod's contents to a CD?

Since the iPod's contents are owned by the library, you do not have the ability to transfer them from the iPod to another device.

Can I download music to the library's iPod?

Technically, yes, if you have the cable that connects the iPod to a computer. The library does not usually provide you with this cable, because connecting the iPod to a computer may result in the iPod's contents being erased. You are strongly encouraged not to try to download additional content to the iPod.

What happens if I lose the iPod?

If you lose the iPod or fail to return it for any reason, you will be expected to pay for it. You will be charged the full price of the iPod, and you will not be able to register for classes or obtain transcripts until your obligation has been paid.

Can I download the library's audiobooks to my own iPod?

The Kendall Campus Library is not offering this service at this time. However, the Miami Dade Public Library System offers a variety of materials that eligible borrowers can download to their computers or hand-held devices. For more information, visit the Miami Dade Public Library's e-media page.
